Matahina are built by ARE – the name means “eyes of the goddess” in Tahitian. These boats were first raced in Tahiti in 2021, where they dominated the field. They are now used by most of the top paddling teams in the world – for example, Shell Va’a.
Matahinas are heavier than Hawaiian Unlimiteds (145lbs), with the Matahina Club Model coming in at 240lbs and the Matahina Performance Model at 210lbs. They also have a different profile, having higher gunwales and cockpits. Together, these differences mean that these boats require careful handling during transport, launching and paddle changes.
Matahinas have again been selected as the V6 for the 2024 IVF World Sprint Championships in Hilo, Hawaii.
The KPC Matahina Program was created for the purpose of providing boat-specific training opportunities for athletes participating at International competitions. All fees and funds collected from this program will be used to cover expenses incurred to provide this opportunity.
All Non-Members will be required to make a refundable damage deposit of $300 in cash (per crew). This deposit will be returned at the end of the usage period provided no damage has been caused to the boat during the usage period.
Users who wish to participate in races are required to inform the centre at least two weeks in advance. This helps the centre manage boat availability effectively and ensure that all users have a fair opportunity for boat usage. Priority will be given to teams making a request before April 1st. For multiple requests of the same boat, there will be a lottery draw to decide which team will be using each boat. All regular trailer fees will apply.
Coaches and Instructors wishing to book boats for lessons and clinics will be considered on a case by case basis. Please present your proposed plans, and request for dates to the Outrigger Committee for approval.
As we cannot predict every situation that may arise, please be aware that the Outrigger Committee may change or update this policy as needed. If you feel that your situation does not fall into the categories above, please present your proposal (in writing) to the Outrigger Committee for approval.
Violations of these rules may result in suspension or termination of boat usage privileges. We urge all users to exercise responsibility and exhibit good stewardship towards our shared resources. Thank you.
